New Aircraft Data Files
« on: April 12, 2009, 12:26:14 PM »
I wanted to give everyone an idea as to the level of complexity required in order to generate an aircraft data file.  Here is a list of the data elements contained in the B737-800 data file...

For each of these data elements, a data table has to be created from the manufacturers planning and performance manual - which is painfully time consuming. Plus, depending on how detailed that manual is (airbus manuals are woefully lacking - unless Christian has an Airbus AFM), you might not have enough data to create the data tables to cover all of the variations and the full range of the performance envelope.

Now, he also has a data handler (my term) written in C++ for EACH of these elements to handle reading the data from the table and using it within TOPCAT.

Needless to say, it is a very long process to create an aircraft model.

I have just started on the B737-700, and while I have all the data required, it just takes time. Also, keep in mind, the data files are based on REAL WORLD data - straight from the manufacturer or aircraft operator.  For example, for my B737-700 data file that I just started, I dont care how PMDG or anyone else models the taxi burn, or all engine acceleration, or if they recognize the v-speeds correctly - the data will come straight from the Boeing manual for the aircraft, without variation. If they model it incorrectly, thats egg on their face.

Because of all the nuances of aircraft flight performance, the easiest way I could say is if the Aircraft Flight Performance Manual is in English (my English is better than my Russian), and includes all of the chase around charts, and is in PDF, I think it could be gotten to at some point. Without that, any data in any datafile would be as valid as spitting into a hurricane...

I know Christian is working on the B757-200 right now; I am not 100% sure what is next for him after that.
