Is the AUTO+ function of the program able to calculate a wind optimized route using longitude/latitude and direct to waypoints? Like this: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/DLH462/history/20130824/0755Z/EDDF/KMIA

Yes, that's the route PFPX gave me (wind optimized, random track / ignoring NATs):

Is there a reason why the route is taking us over the united kingdom and not france?

Yes, because it's shorter  ;)

Have a look at the yellow line - that's the great cirlce (shortest distance)

Hello, two questions again, sorry^^....

1) If for example I flight between TFFR and TFFR (yes...), can I precise a waypoint I want the plane compulsory fly over  ?
For exemple KMIA ? So the plane will take off from TFFR, go to KMIA then return to TFFR, all this using wind optimised route ?

2) When do you expect the Topcat + PFPX box version because I prefere the box version to download one^^...

Hi,

I only can reply to the first question:
Answer is yes, but you have to enter a navaid near KMIA and not the airport as turning point.
Here is an example using: ZBV then DHP as turning point.
This can be done in Advanced Route Editor

Why does the real route go over France if it's longer?

Why does the real route go over France if it's longer?

How long is a piece of string?

Could be a number of reasons.

- carrier preferred route.

- could have less fuel onboard allowing a climb to a higher level where winds are move favourable

- traffic levels forced the use of a different Atlantic track so different route required to get to entry point

- factoring ATC costs against fuel it might have been cheaper to fly over France than through the UK

Without knowing any of the flight details its impossible to know why the route was chosen.

Thanks for this enlightening reply, I wasn't aware that airlines have to pay for enroute ATC.
My hopes were that I would learn more about aviation through PFPX. It seems that has started already  :)

Cheers,
Peter

So I am guessing that I can build a route around manually entered way points, so for example can I enter all the points in say NAT track C, will Pfpx build a route from airport A to airport B via the NAT C way points I entered?

Bonjour,

PFPX allows you to create sub routes with NATs waypoints and insert them into your flight.

Cheers

Can you do the same for OMDB-YSSY using the AUTO+ function please?

Thanks.

I have a question about the route though should the program be planning the route like that? If you look at the route you'll see that as soon as the plane reaches the waypoint "IKATI" it turns directly south to "MML" instead of following the great circle route like it should be... Is this a bug with the wind optimization?

It is trying to wind optimise in the constraints that it follows the airway system - so that large turn is due to the restrictions in airspace available to it.
